Trichomoniasis (commonly referred to as "trich") is one of the three most widespread vaginal infections in women. Trichomoniasis is caused by a one-celled parasite, Trichomonas vaginalis and luckily is a curable sexually transmitted disease.
According to the World Health Organization's, an estimated 7.4 million Trichomoniasis cases are reported each year in the United States against over 180 million cases worldwide.Actual number of people infected with Trichomoniasis are higher than this because the commonly used diagnostic test is only 60-70% sensitive (as said by the Center for Disease Control)
Trichomoniasis affects both women and men. In women, common location of infection is the vagina, while in men urethra is most common location of infection with Trichomoniasis. In women, yellow-green vaginal discharge, fishy odor, pain during urination and sexual intercourse, and genital itching or irritation are the symptoms of Trichomoniasis. Trichomoniasis usually does not show symptoms in men. However, some men may experience discharge from the penis or burning while urination or ejaculation.Trichomoniasis is marked as a contributor to other health complications in both women and men. Trichomoniasis is a risk factor for HIV and contributes to infertility in both women and men. In women, Trichomoniasis has been associated with herpes simplex 2 (HSV-2) acquisition and it has been involved with a two-fold increased risk of cervical neoplasia. Women with Trichomoniasis have a significantly higher rate of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) than uninfected women. In men, Trichomoniasis may be source of nongonococcal urethritis (NGU) and chronic prostatitis.
